Challenge: A naval ship had a Ø560 mm drive shaft rotating at 1000 rpm - without continuous lubrication. The combination of high speed, large size and dry running placed extreme demands on the seal.The existing solution (also supplied by NMF) had an impressive service life of 20 years. Solution: NMF designed a double-lip VR lipseal from H-NBR, a high-performance elastomer with excellent thermal and mechanical stability. The seal is specially developed for minimal friction and reliable sealing without an oil film.In combination with NMF Therbalube - a specially developed lubricant for use under extreme conditions - the dry running problem could be effectively overcome.
Results:
- Immediately after mounting and running in, the temperature stabilizes and does not rise further, even at 1000 rpm
- No excessive wear or heat generation
